Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma(ACC) is a relatively infrequent carcinoma, which grows slowly invades locally to nerves and bones.
In order to ascertain the difference of prognosis and to predict the clinical prognosis in according to the patholgic grade at diagnosis, we followed up and studied 38 cases of ACC from Jan. 1981 since Dec. 1990 in Severance hospital and Yonsei
Cancer
Center.
Sixteen cases which were operated or diagnostically biopsied were pathologically reviewed in 38 cases of ACC. We performed the pathologic review of the 16 cases in according to degree of solid component, mitosis, or cellular atypia. Patients
without
solid pattern showed zero of DOD(died of disease) 3 of NED(no evidence of disease), and 3 of NED(no evidence of disease), and 3 of LWD(living with disease). Patients with solid pattern showed 4 of DOD, 2 of NED, and 4 of LWD. 10 year survival
rate
of
patient with solid pattern was 64% which showed a tendency to be lower than that of patients without solid pattern(100%)(p=0.53). 5year survival rate of patients with mitosis was 66.2% which showed a tendency to be lower than the of patients with
out
mitosis(100%)(p=0.37). 10 year survival rate was somewhat higher in patients with stage I& II than stage III & IV. In evaluation of solid pattern in according to the degree of mitosis and cellular atypia, we noticed that the more solid pattern,
the
more
mitosis and cellular atypia. We got the tendency of influence of pathologic grade on ACC without statistical significance, because of small number of patients group and short period of study. And so further studies are warranted in clinical
course
with
respect to pathologic grade, which would be the significant factor in prediction of the prognosis of ACC.
